i think i get the difference, I always thought zh can be pronounced like the sz in Szasza, a name of a celebrity in my country, Philippines. It's not pronounced like "S, za" which is Sza, a singer in another country. The sz is pronounced like the s in usual, if I were to describe it, it would be a vibrating sh sound or sh but with the vibration of z. The thing is, I cannot ever tell the difference when listening to songs.

I'm from Iowa and I pronounce short o and aw, au, ough the same. I don't really think it is true that most Americans distinguish the two. I've only heard people on the east coast do it, and not really anyone from any other area.
